This variety is generally considered the best flavoured of all quinces. The fruits are large and ripen to yellow-orange and the flesh turns red when cooked. They have a soft texture and mild flavour which makes them ideal for making quince marmalade and jelly. The tree is taller and more vigorous than other cultivated varieties, but is less hardy and therefore more suited to warmer areas. In cooler areas they benefit from being grown as an espalier against a warm wall to protect them from the cold.
